Thailand is an incredibly diverse country, boasting stunning cityscapes, picturesque countrysides, and everything in between. For years, the southeastern paradise has been a favorite of tourists from all over the world due to its unique and universal culture.

This diversity extends to the country's love of sport. Bangkok, the capital, has hosted the Asian Games a record four times, and Thais have had their share of success at the Olympics, particularly in boxing.

Although football, boxing, tennis and badminton are widely played in Thailand, for tourists it is the country's traditional sports that provide the best entertainment.

1. Muay Thai

Muay Thai, which roughly translates to “Thai boxing,” is one of the country’s main claims to fame. The sport is an ancient practice, born in the 13th century for military purposes, and today is a core component of American MMA. Professional fighters frequently travel to the country to attend training camps and take classes from the sport’s masters.

Although violent and certainly not for the faint of heart, Muay Thai is a revered sport in Thailand and a must-see for any tourist wanting to get a real feel for the culture of this exciting country.

Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium

While there are many exciting venues that host Thai boxing matches throughout the country, this one is one of the most famous. Located in Bangkok and built in 1945, about four months after the end of World War II, the Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium has become an institution in Thailand.

With a capacity of around 3 people, if you want to immerse yourself in this ancient sport, this is one of the must-see places. If you are looking for the best deals in Thailand and the surrounding area, book your trip to Thailand with Voyage Privé.

Lumpinee Stadium

Since its opening in 1956, Lumpinee Stadium has been a staple of Thai boxing. If you want to see some of the most competitive fights, this is the place to be. Only the best are allowed to fight here, and the Lumpinee Stadium championship is considered one of the most prestigious in the country.

2. Sepak Takraw

If you have never seen or heard of this sport, you are in for a treat. Estimated to date from the 14th century, Sepak Takraw is an almost divine mix of gymnastics, football and volleyball. It is a sport focused on acrobatics, skill and showmanship.

Played on a court similar to a volleyball court, with a net in the middle and two to four players on each side, these athletes use their feet and incredible skill to pass the ball back and forth and score points.

Games are often held in the evening to escape the sometimes stifling heat of the day.

Where to see Sepak Takraw practitioners?

Although this sport is practiced almost everywhere where a net can be set up, and it is therefore possible to come across them here and there during your walks in the city and in the countryside, it is common to come across them in several parks in Bangkok, particularly here:

  • Benchasiri Park, located near Emporium shopping mall, Phrom Phong BTS station
  • Chatuchak Park (formerly Suan Rot Fai), located next to the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market, Mo Chit BTS Station

It is also possible to see some in the courtyard in front of the National Stadium, next to MBK shopping center.

3. Boat races

Thailand is home to several rowboat racing festivals, most of which last several days and offer a wide range of attractions. The main events, the rowboat races, take place along rivers and canals and feature teams competing in a competitive race.

Boat making is a spectacle. Museums throughout the country feature exhibits decorated with the crafts exhibited at these events.

After all, what's more exciting than seeing 30-metre-long wooden boats racing for glory?

Nan Province

Located in northern Thailand, the Nan Province Festival is one of the most famous of the group. It is a major event within the community, bringing together people from all backgrounds to celebrate their heritage, sports and food.
Dates vary from year to year, so it's best to do some research if you're planning a trip.

Other venues hosting longboat races include, but are not limited to:

  • Surat Thani
  • Samut Prakarn
  • Sakon Nakhon
  • Phichit

    Hi Romain,
    Your publications are always interesting.
In Koh Lanta we often watch in the evening especially at the weekend the young people of the island playing Sepak Takraw. in a parking lot near the beach. There is entertainment and very nice to watch. Some great acrobats with this ball
You can post the dates of the boat races in Nan, when you have them. Thanks in advance.
