Golden Rock: Pilgrimage and Landscape at Mount Kyaiktiyo

The Golden Rock, perched atop Mount Kyaiktiyo, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Burma. Clinging to the edge of a cliff, this rock covered in gold leaf and topped with a small pagoda defies the laws of gravity, according to legend thanks to a hair of Buddha.

But beyond the beliefs, it's also the unique atmosphere of the place—a blend of religious fervor, the bustle of the pilgrims, and the unobstructed panoramic views of the mountains—that makes it an unmissable experience in the region. Reaching it requires a bit of patience (and strong legs!), as the climb to the kyaiktiyo It doesn't happen without effort.

Quick trip to the bus station

Once settled, we will first go and find out about our bus the next day to Mawlamyine (ex Moulmein) before seeing about the trucks going up to the rock.

We will therefore buy our ticket for the journey. Kinpun – Mawlamyine, which we will do immediately after visiting the rock (7 kyats/person).

For trucks, despite the presence of a ticket office, we are told that there is no need to take tickets, we pay directly on site in the truck.

The truck ride, an attraction in itself

While previously, due to the pilgrimage, reaching the mountaintop and the rock required considerable effort, today, and for several years now, trucks depart continuously throughout the day to transport everyone directly to the summit. Only a small minority still climb on foot... the arduous way.

Well, shame on me, I would also choose this easy solution, due to lack of time and still laziness, it must be said. If you are the courageous type and have time, count 4 to 6 hours to connect the 11 km of climb between Kinpun and the rock on foot.

The local "amusement park"!

The trucks are fitted with 7 to 8 rows of benches where everyone squeezes in to optimise the journey. For a fee 2 kyats one way (it's increasing quickly, I read that only 2 years ago, it was 1 kyats...) The front seat being more comfortable and intimate, they charge a little more, at 500 kyats, for those who are interested.

We had decided to leave early in the morning for several reasons, first for the sunrise and the morning atmosphere, fresher and more pleasant.

Then and finally especially, because we were planning to go to Mawlamyine and visit that very afternoon, in order to reserve ourselves more time for Hpa An, our last stop.

Normally the climb takes about 45 min. 45 min roller coaster ride… yes, because that’s kind of the feeling it gives. The driver happily presses the accelerator pedal and each turn becomes a source of sensation worthy of the best amusement parks, well almost…

As proof below in video, we wait until the cry of the merry fellows walking with us that day "Eeeeeehhhh" Youhoo is not far away.... We would almost raise our arms!

The driver will even overtake other, more “behaved” trucks.

Upon arrival, a real fervour takes hold of the many people disembarking by the dozens from the trucks that continually arrive. Porters are there to carry luggage, some pilgrims sleep on site, others even offer to take you in a chair via 4 porters to the rock, some 500 m from the car park (a figure given at random but I estimate that it is of that order…)

The morning light is beautiful and the scenery around us is just superb. mountains as far as the eye can see, with some of them also having stupas and temples at their summits.

A rock in balance

Legend has it that a hair of Buddha was offered to King Tissa, who then had to look for a rock in the shape of the hermit entrusting him with the hair and the task of preserving it preciously. He found it with the help of a nat (sacred spirit in Burma) and placed the hair under the rock, which would then be balanced thanks to this hair.

Concretely, the word " kyaiktiyo » refers to this legend since in the Mon language, the state where the rock is located and populated by this ethnic group, it means « carry on the hermit's head"

Well, obviously this is information that has probably already been said and repeated on other sites, but there you go, I had to go through it to explain why the places are sacred and why this rock…

The Golden Rock: Of the Sacred and the World

When you arrive, you take off your shoes and later on, you pay the Entrance fee for foreigners 6 kyats each. Note that the ground is wet and we cannot say that the people arriving there have clean feet, so we end up with very black feet.

On this morning, there are clearly more locals than tourists, which is a good thing, because the atmosphere there is all the more "real". Many are sitting in a corner and praying, placing incense and flowers.

Unfortunately, like other religions, women are relegated to a lower rank and certain specific parts of the site are inaccessible to them, including the rock. Only men can approach her and come and stick a gold leaf on it, not without passing through the gate and security... We don't joke with the sacred...

The market and descent towards Kinpun

After seeing the rock from all angles and admiring the view of the mountains, we quickly went to take a tour towards the market. You should know that over the years, a real small town has grown around the rock, with hotels, school, etc.

It's very lively this morning, they're selling everything and anything, everything is carried on their backs or heads, whether it's women, children or men, everyone is contributing to this local economy, some are loaded like mules, hats off to them.

Before deciding to head back down, I briefly climbed a small hill, unfortunately off-limits to women. There I found a monk and another person meditating and praying in the shade of the trees. Slightly removed from the town, it had a very Zen-like feel.

Then it was time to head back to the parking lot and catch a truck to return to base camp, Kinpun. The descent was a little gentler than the ascent, and we disembarked in front of a row of souvenir shops; the train station was only used for boarding.

To give you a precise idea of the timing, we left at 6:00 AM from the Kipun bus station. Once at the summit, we lingered for a good three hours. By the time we got back to our starting point, it was already 10:00 AM when we arrived in Kipun.

It's breakfast time, and we still have a little time before catching our bus to Mawlamyine. We'll go to the nearest restaurant, the Mya Yeik NyoIt was very good and reasonably priced.

Getting to Kinpun from Bago

Kinpun is the base camp at the foot of the Golden Rock mountain; it was our next destination after our day of visit to Bago.

From the old capital, we had taken a direct bus to Kinpun for 6,000 kyats each. The journey takes just over two hours in a perfectly adequate little local bus. The scenery is mostly flat. The road has supposedly been widened since then, indicating they can now carry more people in the area.

Where to stay in Kinpun?

We had chosen to sleep at the foot of the mountain, although at first we were planning to sleep at the summit.

But the lack of choice and the excessive prices made us change our minds and we opted for a hotel that was a little more comfortable than usual, right next to the boarding station where the trucks leave for the rock.

We were at the Bawga Theiddhi Hotel, ultimately probably the most comfortable hotel of our entire stay, despite an apparent lack of maintenance (especially obvious in the bathroom... After all, it's Burma, we know that conditions can be harsh).

    Hello (and Happy New Year!),

If there is accommodation at the summit, it is rather expensive and not necessarily of good quality. On the other hand, I doubt, given the sacred nature of the place, that you can pitch your tent there like that...

So you took a bus from Kinpun to Moulmein? Do you remember the schedule and the duration of the journey?
Thank you
