There are many stories related to this West Lake. The most popular is the legend of the golden buffalo. According to what is said, there was a medicine man who was giant. He was well-known in Vietnam for his practice of medicine and the king often called on him to treat the royal family. His fame reached China and he was invited there to treat the king. He succeeded where others failed so the king would reward him with great wealth. He refused the gold and only asked that the king give him all the black copper in his vault. The king agreed and the giant returned to Vietnam with large quantities of black copper. Back in Vietnam, the giant cast a giant bell from it. He then rang it and the sound echoed all the way to China. In the king's vault was a golden buffalo. After hearing the sound of the bell, the buffalo came to life (because it thought its mother was calling it) and charged south. Upon arriving in Ha Noi, the buffalo trampled the earth in the area near the Red River. Over the years, this area filled with water and became Ho Tay or "West Lake".8- Hoa Lo PrisonHoa Lo Prison, later ironically known by American POWs as the "Hanoi Hilton," was a prison used by French colonials in Vietnam for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War.9- Hanoi Night MarketThis market stretches from Hang Dao Street to Dong Xuan Market and creates a bustling and crowded street of stalls.
